Let’s talk about how to create your very own tarantula habitat! Buying tarantulas is fun, but a big part of the joy of tarantula keeping is providing a good home for your spider. One area that new tarantula owners struggle with and have so many questions about are enclosures (which are also referred to as terrariums or vivariums). There’s a lot of information out there, and it’s not always accurate. If you’ve bought your tarantula from a pet store that does not specialize in exotic animals, you are at an even higher risk to receive misinformation, as pet stores rarely know anything about tarantulas or how to properly care for them (just look at the tarantula habitats they set up for THEIR tarantulas – they’re usually committing several tarantula-keeping sins at once!)

The tarantula habitat you create will all depend on the species of tarantula you have, but basically all tarantulas need a well-ventilated tank, some good substrate (like this or this), access to a water dish, some decor and an area to hide in, and a setup that keeps them safe. Generally, terrestrial tarantulas are safest in a landscape-style habitat with tons of substrate, while arboreal tarantulas do better with higher walls or a portrait-style habitat with some climbing decor.

For beginners, it can be useful to see some visuals and examples of a tarantula habitat so you can see the endless possibilities of housing for your tarantula. It should be noted that most species of tarantulas must live in their own enclosures – putting two tarantulas together in an enclosure has a very high risk of cannibalism.
